causes like lack of sleep, stress, age, and even what you eat can rob your
complexion of its radiance. Transform skin that looks dull and tired to luminous
and glowing with expert tips and product picks from Good Housekeeping
Institute Beauty Lab scientists and dermatologist experts on how to make your
skin glow naturally, no matter how much time you have: months, one or two
weeks, overnight, or even minutes!
1. Wash your face regularly
It may seem obvious, but I'm going to go ahead and say it anyway. You should be washing your face twice a day. Clogged pores cause dullness, so get rid of all of the dirt, oil, and pollution dimming your glow.
2. Get into serums and oils.
Massaging a serum or oil onto your face in the morning can help wake up your
complexion and get the blood moving.
I don't care if it isn't even sunny out, you should be wearing sunscreen every.
single. day. UV rays damage your skin cells, and make your skin's surface
uneven, meaning it won't "reflect the light very well, hence no glowiness," Dr.
Shamban says. So, make it part of your morning routine and slap on suncreen
every darn day!
Do: Exercise regularly. Running, jogging and yoga will give your body the
necessary blood circulation, and also accelerate the cleansing process of your
entire body. You will notice a glow on your face after working out. Racing
against time? Just take a brisk walk around the block.
Don’t: Skip skincare before and after a workout. Apply a toner to help minimize
oil production before heading out. Exfoliate after, and then apply shea butter or
olive oil to moisturize the skin.
It's called beauty sleep for a reason! "Enough sleep assists the skin in normal
skin turnover and exfoliation," Dr. Shamban says. When you aren't getting
enough sleep, your skin pays the price, so make sure to get at least seven hours a
night.
OK, so we've gone over all of the things that you can do to your face to boost
your glow, but there are some more steps to take that will work from the inside-
out. Dermatologists suggest foods that are high in antioxidants to help your skin
glow. Try grapes, berries, and nuts like pecans and walnuts. The antioxidants in
these foods have been linked to protecting your skin against UV damage, so next
time you're looking for a midday snack, make sure to grab those blueberries. Dr.
Shamban also suggests making your own fruit juices from farmers market fruits
and vegetable to "see your skin perk up."
