The little known face of heart disease in women

Other disorders and conditions that affect only women include Turner syndrome,

Rett syndrome, and ovarian and cervical cancers. Issues related to women's

overall health and wellness include violence against women, women with

disabilities and their unique challenges, osteoporosis and bone health, and

menopause.

Heart attacks are not always what you think. While chest pain is the most

common symptom for men and women, women are more likely than men to

experience the non-chest pain symptoms such as jaw and back pain, nausea and

fatigue.”

“If you experience these symptoms, you need to call triple zero immediately.

The sooner you get to hospital the sooner treatment starts,” she said.

To help raise awareness of SCAD, the Heart Foundation have funded a video

urging women of all ages and fitness levels to seek medical advice if they

experience heart attack symptoms.

Featuring SCAD survivors who were in their 30s, 40s and 50s when they

suffered heart attacks, as well as their young children, this video brings to life

the reality that SCAD strikes women who would never fit the stereotype of heart

 attack survivors.

“Women are often so focused on taking care of others and juggling busy lives

that it can be easy to dismiss heart attack symptoms or delay treatment, often

with tragic results. It’s vital that we care for the women around us, urging them

to take symptoms seriously. Early treatment saves lives,” Sarah added.

“While the exact cause of SCAD is not known, a number of research studies are

looking into new treatments and better methods of detection,” added Julie Anne.
